President Trump stated that a pardon request from defense attorney Kevin Reddington regarding Lindsay Clancy is a state-level situation where he has no authority to intervene, according to coverage from CBS News. Clancy is accused of murdering her three children in 2023 in Duxbury, Massachusetts.

Reddington publicly asked the president for a federal pardon during a national television appearance, despite acknowledging that Clancy faces no federal charges. In a subsequent interview with WBZ-TV, Reddington explained that his public appeal was an attempt to draw presidential attention to the case and encourage the president to contact Plymouth District Attorney Tim Cruz, a fellow Republican.

Responding to reporters while leaving a two-day trip to Ireland, Mr. Trump addressed the request directly. It’s a very sad situation. I certainly heard that, the president said, as reported by CBS News. Look, it’s very sad. There’s no winner there. There’s no win no matter what you do. Three children are dead. So I don’t know. It’s actually a state situation, not a federal.

When asked if he planned to contact Plymouth District Attorney Tim Cruz, Mr. Trump declined to intervene. I appreciate that he feels that way, and he’s a good attorney. I’ve heard from other people he’s a very good attorney. I hope they can work it out, the president stated, according to CBS News. That’s something they have to work out. It’s very sad. There is no win there.

Legal Context and Next Court Dates

The legal proceedings follow a mistrial declared after an 11-1 split among jurors. Reddington admits that Clancy killed the children in January 2023 but argues she should not bear criminal responsibility because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time.

District Attorney Tim Cruz has not yet indicated whether prosecutors will retry the case following the hung jury. Reddington is currently petitioning the court to throw out the case entirely based on feedback from jurors.

The next scheduled court hearing in the matter is set for Sept. 29, according to CBS News.
