Trump Hints at Major ⁤Russia Sanctions as Republicans Push Bipartisan ⁤Legislation

Washington D.C. – president Donald ⁢Trump has⁣ signaled a significant shift in his approach to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, warning ⁢of a “great magnitude announcement” regarding Russia just as republicans in the Senate ⁢prepare to introduce legislation for overwhelming sanctions against Moscow. This comes after weeks of ‍expressed frustration with russian President Vladimir Putin and a recent indication that Trump⁤ is willing to toughen sanctions on Russia.

Trump, who began his second term with a promise to swiftly end the ukraine conflict, announced his intention⁢ to send Patriot air Defense⁣ systems to‍ Ukraine. This move contrasts with his statement two weeks‍ prior, where he indicated a suspension of weapons deliveries ‍to Kyiv. “We will send you ⁤the Patriot, who desperately need,” Trump stated, though he did not specify the number of units to be dispatched to Ukraine,⁢ which is currently experiencing an intensification of the Russian offensive that ⁢began in 2022. Notably,⁢ the president ⁤clarified ‍that the United States would not bear the cost of these shipments, remarking, “It will be a⁢ business for us.”

The⁢ President is scheduled to meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at⁤ 10:00⁤ AM local time (2:00 ⁢PM GMT) in⁣ the Oval⁢ Office.⁢ Rutte is in Washington for⁣ a two-day visit and will also hold meetings with pentagon chief Pete Hegseth and ⁤Secretary⁢ of State Marco‍ Rubio. Simultaneously occurring, U.S. Special Envoy Keith Kellogg arrived in Kyiv on Monday.

Trump reiterated his⁣ “disappointment” with putin on Sunday, telling reporters after attending⁤ the Club World Cup final in New Jersey, “Putin really surprised many peopel. He speaks⁤ beautiful and then bombarded everyone at night.” Earlier in his second term,Trump had suggested the possibility of working with the Russian⁣ leader to expedite the end of the war. However, Russia has resisted ceasefire efforts driven by the ⁢United States for months. Ahead ⁤of his meeting with Rutte, Trump hinted at potential sanctions against Moscow, ‍a measure that enjoys considerable support in Congress, stating, “We’ll see what ⁤happens tomorrow.”

trump Bipartisan Law to Apply Sanctions to Russia

In parallel,U.S. senators⁢ are preparing a ⁢bipartisan bill ⁣designed to empower Trump to impose “forceful” sanctions ‍on Russia. “This law would allow the president ‘to go after Putin’s economy, and from all the countries ⁢that support the warlike machinery of Putin,'” stated Republican ⁤Senator Lindsey Graham to⁣ CBS. Graham‍ elaborated that the legislative package ‍would⁤ grant ⁤President Trump the authority to impose “500% tariffs on any ⁣country that helps Russia,” specifically mentioning nations ‍like China,India, and Brazil that purchase Russian products.”That is truly a⁣ deck available for President Trump to end the war,” the influential ‍senator added.

Graham, along with Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, will also meet with the NATO Secretary⁢ General on Monday. Blumenthal informed CBS that ⁤their⁣ discussion would include the ⁢complex legal mechanisms ⁤required to unfreeze⁢ Russian assets held in Europe and⁤ the United States, thereby enabling Ukraine to benefit. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has lauded the legislative project, declaring it ⁢”exactly the type of⁢ support that⁣ peace can bring and make diplomacy not empty.” The recent intensification of ⁢the Russian offensive in Ukraine has coincided with a stalemate in U.S.-led negotiations aimed at halting the fighting.
