Trump says Thailand, Cambodia agree to hold immediate ceasefire talks

July 26, 2025 Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor World

Thailand and ⁤Cambodia Clash in Escalating border dispute

Bangkok ⁣and Phnom Penh trade accusations of aggression as long-standing territorial disagreements reignite, threatening regional stability.

Thailand has urged Cambodia⁣ to “immediately cease all hostilities and acts of aggression, and resume dialogue ‍in good faith” following a meaningful escalation of ‌border tensions.⁤ The call comes after Thailand’s ambassador to the United Nations informed ⁤the Security Council on Friday that Cambodian forces had injured Thai soldiers with newly⁤ planted landmines on two occasions since mid-July. Cambodia has vehemently denied these⁤ claims.

The Thai ambassador, Cherdchai Chaivaivid, further stated that Cambodia⁣ launched attacks on Thursday morning. In response, Cambodia’s Defense Ministry accused Thailand of initiating “a intentional, unprovoked and unlawful military attack” and ‌of mobilizing troops⁣ and military equipment along the shared border. The ministry asserted that these actions reveal ‌Thailand’s intention to “expand ⁤its aggression and ‍further⁣ violate Cambodia’s sovereignty.”

Cambodia has called for the⁢ international community to “condemn Thailand’s aggression ‌in the strongest terms” and to prevent any further military‌ expansion. Meanwhile, Thailand maintains ‌its preference for a bilateral resolution to the ⁢ongoing dispute.

A Century of Contention: The Roots of the Conflict

The current clashes are ⁢the latest manifestation of a long-standing territorial dispute between Thailand and‍ Cambodia, which have bickered for decades over jurisdiction of various un-demarcated points along their 817-kilometre land border. ‍Central to these disagreements are the ownership of the ⁢ancient Hindu temples Ta moan Thom and the 11th-century Preah ⁢Vihear.

the ownership of preah Vihear was awarded to Cambodia by the International court ⁣of Justice in 1962. Though, tensions‍ considerably escalated in 2008 ‍when Cambodia‌ sought to list the temple complex as a UNESCO World ‌Heritage site. This move ⁣triggered skirmishes over ⁤several years, ⁣resulting ⁣in at least a dozen fatalities.

In June, Cambodia announced it had⁣ requested the International Court of‍ justice to resolve its ongoing⁤ disputes with Thailand. Thailand, however, has‍ stated it has never recognized the court’s jurisdiction and continues to advocate for a bilateral approach to settling the border issues.

International Scrutiny and ⁣Diplomatic Efforts

The escalating conflict‍ has drawn international attention, with Thailand engaging with respective foreign ministries to de-escalate the situation. A Thai ⁣diplomat indicated a personal commitment to continued engagement, aiming “at least ⁢to halt the fighting.” The Security Council meeting highlighted the international community’s awareness of the volatile situation, ⁢though specific ‍actions or resolutions were not detailed in the provided statements.

The ongoing military posturing and exchange of accusations underscore the ⁢fragility of peace along the Thai-Cambodian border, a region historically marked by territorial ‍disputes⁣ and occasional violent confrontations. ⁣The international community watches closely as diplomatic efforts continue, with the hope of preventing further bloodshed and finding a lasting resolution⁣ to this⁤ protracted border conflict.
