The primary objective of the call was to persuade Trump to broker a ceasefire. Trump reportedly assured the leaders that russia would face ”severe consequences” if it failed to halt its offensive. However, Zelenskyy expressed skepticism about Russia’s commitment to peace. “I have told my colleagues – the U.S. president and our European friends — that Mr. putin definitely does not want peace,” Zelenskyy stated.
Trump downplayed the likelihood of an immediate breakthrough during his planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, characterizing it as a “feel-out meeting.” He suggested the possibility of future negotiations involving territorial adjustments, stating, “there’ll be some swapping, there’ll be some changes in land.”
Merz indicated Ukraine’s willingness to negotiate “on territorial issues” but firmly stated that legal recognition of Russian-occupied territories was “not up for debate.”
European commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the strengthened unity between Europe, the United States, and NATO in support of Ukraine. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte declared, “The ball is now in Putin’s court.”
Russia Dismisses Diplomacy, Intensifies Offensive
The Russian foreign ministry dismissed the diplomatic efforts as “politically and practically insignificant,” accusing them of “sabotaging” existing US-Russian efforts to resolve the conflict.
Despite the optimistic pronouncements from European leaders, Russia’s offensive in eastern ukraine has been gaining momentum.
Rapid Russian Advances
Recent data analysis reveals significant Russian territorial gains. AFP reported that on August 12,Russian forces captured or claimed 110 square kilometers (42.5 square miles), marking the largest advance since late May 2024. This rapid progress highlights the challenges facing Ukrainian forces on the ground.
Ukrainian Soldiers’ Dim Outlook
Ukrainian soldiers stationed in Kramatorsk, a city near the front lines, expressed low expectations for Trump’s meeting with putin. Artem, a 30-year-old serviceman, predicted a prolonged conflict. “Putin is massing an army, his army is growing, he is stockpiling weapons, he is pulling the wool over our eyes,” Artem said, reflecting a sense of foreboding among those fighting on the front lines. The sentiment underscores the deep-seated distrust and the perceived long road ahead in the war.
