President Donald Trump has faced widespread criticism from religious leaders and his own supporter base after posting and subsequently deleting an AI-generated image on Truth Social that appeared to depict him as a Jesus-like figure. The controversy emerged on April 13, 2026, following a series of social media posts in which the U.S. President attacked Pope Leo XIV.
The image showed President Trump wearing white robes and a red sash, placing his hand on the forehead of a bedridden patient. The scene included four adoring figures, including a soldier and a nurse. The background featured an eagle flying in front of the U.S. Flag, military jets, and soldiers ascending toward a light resembling heaven.
Following the backlash, President Trump deleted the post and claimed the image was intended to depict him as a Red Cross worker. I did post it, and I thought it was me as a doctor, and it had to do with Red Cross, as a Red Cross worker there, which we support,
Trump stated.
Conflict with the Vatican
The imagery followed an explicit attack by the president on Pope Leo XIV. In a post on Truth Social, President Trump wrote, Pope Leo is WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy.
The tension between the U.S. Administration and the Holy See is centered on the war on Iran. Pope Leo XIV has harshly criticized the president’s threats to wipe out a whole civilization in Iran. The conflict follows reports of a tense meeting between Vatican and Pentagon officials in January 2026.
Responding to the president’s attacks, Pope Leo XIV stated that he is not afraid of the Trump administration
and affirmed that he will continue to speak out against war.
Religious and Political Backlash
The president’s actions prompted condemnation from high-ranking Catholic officials and former political allies. Minnesota Bishop Robert Barron, who serves on the president’s Religious Liberty Commission, described the statements regarding the pope as entirely inappropriate and disrespectful
and stated that the president owes the pope an apology.

Archbishop Paul Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said he was disheartened
by the disparaging words used by the president toward the Holy Father.
The reaction extended to former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who resigned from Congress in January 2026 after clashing with the president and the Republican party. Greene described the AI-generated image as more than blasphemy
and characterized it as an Antichrist spirit.
Supporters of the president on Truth Social also expressed repulsion. One user, identified as Sheriffwoody83, wrote, Equating yourself to Jesus? You’ll burn in hell,
while another user, msamiraghab, suggested that any Christian not outraged by the post should re-evaluate their faith.
Context of the Dispute
The diplomatic friction between the United States and the Vatican has escalated over the administration’s approach to Middle Eastern foreign policy. The Pope’s opposition to the war on Iran has placed him in direct ideological conflict with the president’s stated objectives.
The use of Christ-like imagery for political messaging has been viewed by critics and religious followers as crossing a fundamental line, regardless of the political affiliation of those criticizing the posts.
