Trump Steel Tariffs: 200% Duty Plan
Trump Floats Doubling Steel Tariffs to 50% Amid Industry Push
Updated May 31, 2025
Former President Donald Trump indicated Friday his intention to double existing steel tariffs, raising them to 50%. The announcement regarding the steel industry and potential steel tariffs came during a speech at U.S. steel’s Irvin Works in West Mifflin, Pa.
Trump stated the move is designed to safeguard American steelworkers and reinforce the domestic steel industry. Since March 12, the U.S. has had a 25% tariff on steel imports. The U.S. imports approximately 25 million tons of steel annually, representing 23% of domestic steel consumption.
The announcement follows recent legal challenges to some of Trump’s previous tariff impositions. While a court initially blocked one order, the administration received a temporary reprieve pending further appeals. This block, though, did not extend to the steel tariffs.
During his first term, Trump implemented a 25% tariff on steel imports. He argued that these tariffs would provide U.S. steel producers with an advantage and prevent job losses. Though, economists have noted that the effects on jobs were mixed, with some steel companies hiring more workers while steel-using companies hired fewer.
What’s next
The proposed increase in steel tariffs could trigger further legal challenges and impact international trade relations, particularly with countries that export significant amounts of steel to the U.S.
