Trump’s Steel Tariffs: A Potential Jolt for US Steel Manufacturing

⁢ Updated June 04, 2025

President Donald Trump’s latest move to⁤ increase tariffs on steel imports ‍is poised to considerably impact the American ⁤steel industry. The executive order,⁢ signed last week, doubled the existing 25% duties on steel to 50%, effective Wednesday. Aluminum products are also affected by the tariff increase.

Trump, speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania, stated the tariffs would “further secure the steel industry in the United States.” The move has been lauded by U.S. steel firms,⁣ a stark contrast to the general backlash against tariffs. The Steel Manufacturers Association released a statement praising Trump’s commitment to revitalizing domestic⁢ manufacturing.

The market responded favorably, with steel stocks surging and prices for both steel and aluminum rising. The steel⁣ manufacturing industry currently employs 86,000 workers in the U.S. While this is a significant drop from the post-World War II era, employment ‍has ⁢recently stabilized.

However, experts caution that the benefits to the steel industry may come at a cost to othre sectors. Ken Kolb, an expert on industrial transitions at Furman University, suggests that while some new‍ jobs ⁣might potentially be created in steel, the increased costs for industries reliant on steel, such as autos and ‍construction, could negate those gains. He argues⁢ that higher steel prices will lead businesses to reduce purchases and investment.

A previous study indicated that Trump’s 2018 steel tariffs, while creating 1,000 direct jobs ⁣in steel, resulted⁢ in 75,000 job losses in downstream industries due to increased costs and reduced competitiveness.

“Theoretically you’re going to be able to‍ hire some people, but in reality, the tariffs just raise the average price of steel,” Kolb said. “And when the price of a commodity like that goes up, businesses just buy less and sideline investment.”

Josh Spoores, head of Steel Americas Analysis at CRU Group, notes that while sustained higher tariffs could spur new investments, building ⁤new steel mills is a lengthy process, taking at least two years.

Even within the steel industry, there is not global‍ support for‍ the tariffs. the United Steelworkers union, while acknowledging the strategic value of tariffs, emphasized the need for broader‍ reforms to the global trading system and collaboration with allies like Canada.

The union has also expressed reservations regarding Trump’s proposed partnership between U.S. Steel and Japan’s ⁢Nippon⁤ Steel, despite Trump’s claim that the deal could create as many as 70,000 jobs.

“Whatever the deal structure, our primary concern remains with the impact that this merger ⁢of U.S. Steel into a foreign competitor will have on national‍ security, ⁢our ⁤members and the communities where we live and work,” the United Steelworkers said.

What’s next

The long-term effects of the increased steel tariffs‍ remain uncertain. While the U.S. ‍steel industry may experience a short-term boost, the potential for job ⁣losses in other sectors and the ongoing concerns surrounding international partnerships raise questions about ‍the overall economic impact of the policy.
