Trump Supporter: Former Critic Turns Fan – Political Shift
A pragmatic View: Finding Merit in Trump’s Presidency

In the often-polarized landscape of American politics, it’s easy to get lost in the noise. But as I’ve observed the current governance, particularly the approach of President Trump, I find myself compelled to look beyond the surface-level rhetoric and focus on the tangible outcomes and underlying intentions. It’s a perspective that, I believe, many are missing, blinded by what I see as an almost reflexive opposition.
Let’s talk about the economy. The President’s approach to trade, as an example, has been characterized by a willingness to challenge established norms. While the constant shifts in tariff policies might seem chaotic – a veritable “up,down, all around” – I see a purposeful effort to address what I perceive as long-standing,one-sided trade relationships. It’s a bold move, one that no president before him, in my experience, has tackled with such directness.
On domestic production, particularly oil, some might argue for a more measured approach. Though, the President’s underlying message to the business community is one of genuine helpfulness: “What can we do to be more helpful?” This welcoming stance, this desire to foster growth and chance, is a refreshing change of pace.
Immigration: A Complex Equation
The issue of immigration is, without question, fraught with difficulty. It’s deeply regrettable when innocent individuals are caught in the crossfire of mass immigration raids. Yet, I can’t help but consider the possibility that such situations might be mitigated if local officials were more proactive in cooperating with federal efforts and if criminal elements weren’t allowed to embed themselves so deeply within communities.
moreover, haven’t we heard from both sides of the aisle the necessity of securing our borders and enforcing our laws before embarking on a thorough overhaul of our immigration system? It’s a sentiment that resonates with me.
“We need to bring in the workers we need,” I’ve said, and I believe it. ”I mean, if somebody’s coming here to work and be a meaningful part of society, God bless, man.” it’s about finding a balance, a way to welcome those who contribute while maintaining order and security.
Beyond the Partisan Divide
It’s easy to dismiss a president based on their personality or interaction style. But I believe we do ourselves a disservice if we allow our personal feelings to overshadow a fair assessment of their performance. Many, in their fervent opposition to Trump, seem unable to see, or perhaps unwilling to acknowledge, the positive aspects of his presidency.
“I’ve got to look at the results,” I maintain. And despite his frequently enough-caustic attitude and behaviour, I genuinely believe he has done a really, really good job.
A Lost Sense of Respect
I recall the election of Barack Obama. A dear freind, a Black man, shared his elation with me, saying, ”roger, you’ve got a Black president.” I responded, “You know, Kevin, you’re right. And he’s my president, just like he’s your president. We don’t have to agree on everything, but, by God, he’s the president of the United States, and we respect that office.”
I paused, my disapproval evident. “We’ve lost that,” I said. That fundamental respect for the office, irrespective of who occupies it, seems to have eroded. And in that loss, I fear we lose something vital to the health of our republic.
