Trump’s Proposed Tariffs Cast a Shadow
The India-US relationship has recently come under scrutiny following former US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 25% tariff on Indian goods, including a penalty for purchases from Russia. Trump, in a post on his Truth Social account, cited high Indian tariffs and non-monetary trade barriers as reasons for limited business between the two nations.
He also pointed to India’s significant military equipment purchases from Russia and its role as a major energy buyer alongside China, at a time when global pressure is mounting on Russia regarding the conflict in Ukraine. Trump declared, “INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. MAGA!” This move has introduced a new dynamic into the economic aspects of the bilateral relationship.
