Trump Threatens 100% Tariff to Protect U.S. Dollar Amid BRICS Currency Shift
President-elect Donald Trump has urged developing countries to keep using the U.S. dollar as their main reserve currency. He threatened to impose a 100 percent tariff on countries that try to move away from the dollar.
Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social, that the BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—should not attempt to create a new currency. He emphasized that these countries must not support any alternative currency to replace the U.S. dollar, or they would face severe penalties, including losing access to the U.S. market.
BRICS has grown to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. Trump’s statement reflects rising tensions as these nations explore options beyond the U.S. dollar for international trade.
