Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs on BRIC Nations Amid Dollar Dominance Concerns

Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs on BRIC Nations Amid Dollar Dominance Concerns

Trump Threatens Tariffs Against BRIC Nations

President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose 100% tariffs on nine countries if they undermine the U.S. dollar. This warning targets the BRIC alliance, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Malaysia have shown interest in joining this group. While the U.S. dollar remains the dominant currency globally, BRIC nations are frustrated with America’s control over the financial system. The dollar accounts for about 58% of the world’s foreign exchange reserves. Major commodities, including oil, are mainly traded in dollars. However, the BRIC nations are looking to trade using their own currencies, a movement referred to as de-dollarization.

Trump stated, “We require a commitment from these countries that they will neither create a new BRICS currency nor back any other currency to replace the mighty U.S. dollar, or they will face 100% tariffs.” He emphasized that those countries would have to say goodbye to doing business in the U.S.

At a recent summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the U.S. of “weaponizing” the dollar and expressed frustration about the need to seek alternatives. He noted that Russia is advocating for a new payment system to evade Western sanctions and maintain trade with partners.

Trump declared that there is "no chance" for BRIC to replace the U.S. dollar in global trade. He warned that any nation attempting this move should prepare for consequences.

Despite the growing BRIC alliance, research indicates the U.S. dollar’s status as the primary global reserve currency is secure for now. An Atlantic Council model supports this, stating the dollar remains dominant in the near to medium term.

Trump’s tariff warning follows previous threats of tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. He aims to pressure these nations to act on immigration and drug trafficking issues. Recent discussions with leaders from Mexico and Canada have not resolved concerns about potential tariffs on those countries.
