Updated june 30, 2025
president Donald Trump is threatening to cut federal funding to New York City if Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, wins the upcoming mayoral election. The threat comes as Mamdani proposes tax hikes on incomes exceeding $1 million and corporate taxes mirroring New Jersey’s rates. Trump, who advocates for permanent tax cuts for wealthy Americans, labeled Mamdani a “communist.”
Trump, speaking on Fox News, said mamdani needs to “do the right thing,” adding that the city would not recieve federal money if Mamdani is elected and does not comply. The president did not specify what “the right thing” entailed.
Mamdani, appearing on ”Meet the Press,” addressed concerns about his platform, including the existence of billionaires. He stated that he doesn’t believe billionaires should exist, citing income inequality. He added that his proposed tax increases would support initiatives to make New York City more affordable, benefiting businesses.
“I don’t think that we should have billionaires,” Mamdani said. “Frankly, it is indeed so much money in a moment of such inequality… I look forward to work with everyone, including billionaires, to make a city that is fairer for all of them.”
Mamdani faces a challenging path to the mayor’s office. Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo plans to run as an autonomous, joining incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who did not participate in the Democratic primary. Trump declined to endorse any candidate, warning that the next mayor must “behave themselves” to avoid federal financial repercussions.
