Greenland Purchase Dispute escalates as Trump Threatens Tariffs
A dispute between the United States and European nations over Greenland intensified on Sunday, January 18, 2026, after President Donald Trump threatened new tariffs on European goods. The tariffs are contingent on European support for a potential U.S. purchase of the semi-autonomous region of Greenland, currently part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Trump announced on Saturday,January 17,2026,that eight NATO allies will face increased tariffs beginning February 1,2026. These tariffs will start at 10% and escalate to 25% by June 1, 2025, unless an agreement is reached for the “complete and total purchase of Greenland,” according to a post on Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social.
The proposed tariffs target Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, England, the Netherlands, and Finland. Trump stated the tariffs would apply to goods sent to the U.S. from these eight NATO members.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer responded on Saturday, calling the imposition of tariffs on allies to pursue the purchase of Greenland “fully wrong and unacceptable.”
