National Guard Deployed amid Los Angeles Immigration⁣ Protests

Updated June 9, 2025
⁣

The National Guard has been deployed to Los Angeles following days of protests sparked by federal immigration enforcement actions. The first National Guard troops arrived early ‍Sunday at the Edward Roybal building, a detention center for undocumented immigrants, joining ⁢the scene of ongoing demonstrations.

The deployment follows ⁣protests that began Friday after ⁢agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted raids in the Los Angeles area, arresting nearly 50 undocumented⁣ migrants, most of whom are of Mexican nationality. One demonstration took place in Paramount after reports circulated that ICE agents were present at a⁢ Home depot, leading to clashes between protesters and federal agents.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom confirmed ⁢the activation of⁢ 2,000 national ⁤Guard troops, criticizing the⁢ move as one that would “only escalate tensions.” He referenced the Guard’s previous assistance to Los Angeles after the fires earlier in 2025, but stated that this new mission was misguided.

Federal prosecutor Bill Essayli confirmed the‍ immigration enforcement operations in Los ⁤Angeles. ICE,though, denied conducting ⁢operations at the Home Depot, though their ⁣presence drew⁢ community attention and sparked protests.

Protests near the Home Depot lasted five hours,⁤ with demonstrators chanting⁢ slogans and waving Mexican flags. Some protesters created‍ barricades and set fires, also burning a U.S. flag. clashes ‍escalated, leading⁣ to the mobilization of a border ‍patrol ⁢tactical unit that used⁣ non-lethal weapons. ⁢Several arrests were made, according to Michael Banks, ‍the force director, who stated ⁤that attacks on federal agents would not be tolerated.

Kristi Noem, Secretary⁤ of Internal Security, asserted that the government would not be deterred by the protests. The administration reported that ICE agents have arrested approximately 2,000 undocumented individuals daily across the country this week, with 118 arrests ‍in Los Angeles, including gang members and individuals with criminal records.

mexican Consul Carlos⁤ González stated that about two-thirds of those detained in the Friday raids were Mexican citizens. He ⁣noted that the arrests occurred at work sites, with many detainees having established lives in the U.S. for years, some with American children.

The Trump administration criticized local authorities for their response time⁣ to the protests, while the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) cited traffic and ⁢the use of irritants by federal agents as factors contributing to their arrival time. The ⁤administration also blamed Democratic politicians ⁢for inciting violence against immigration officials.

“This mission is wrong and will⁢ only erode the public’s confidence,” saeid Newsom.

What’s next

The situation remains tense in Los Angeles, with further protests anticipated. The coming days will likely see continued debate over federal immigration policy and the role of the National Guard in local law enforcement.
