Trump Shifts on Ukraine, eyes More Military Aid
Updated June 26, 2025
Donald Trump has signaled a potential shift in his approach to the Ukraine conflict, suggesting he would consider providing additional military support to Kyiv. Speaking after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump emphasized the ”spirit” of Ukraine’s resistance against Russia’s invasion.
In what appears to be a notable change, Trump also placed blame on Vladimir Putin for the ongoing war. This contrasts with his earlier stance during a meeting with Zelensky earlier this year.
“Vladimir Putin really has to end that war,” Trump said, highlighting the high death toll. He also mentioned a recent phone call where he urged Putin to focus on ending the Ukraine conflict instead of mediating between Israel and Iran.

Trump noted that Putin has been “more difficult” to deal with than Zelensky, with whom he has a history of strained relations. His relationship with Putin, while historically friendlier, has seemingly cooled as the conflict in Ukraine continues.
Back in April, Trump publicly urged Putin to halt attacks on civilians and negotiate a peace deal. He has since raised the possibility of imposing new sanctions on Moscow if Putin does not cooperate with efforts to resolve the conflict.

Trump’s evolving view of the war was further highlighted during an exchange with a Ukrainian reporter, who inquired about the potential sale of more Patriot anti-air missiles to Ukraine.
After learning that the reporter was based in Warsaw with her children while her husband remained in Ukraine, trump expressed sympathy. He then indicated a willingness to consider making Patriot missiles available to Ukraine, acknowledging their effectiveness and difficulty to obtain. He also noted that the U.S. has been prioritizing supplies for Israel.
Trump’s openness to providing further American aid to Ukraine comes as NATO members have pledged to reaffirm their commitment to supporting Ukraine, recognizing its security efforts as a contribution to NATO’s own security. The alliance also aims to include direct contributions to Ukraine’s defense as part of its defense spending goals.
