Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has sparked unrest in Springfield, Ohio, with false claims about immigrants eating residents’ pets.
Trump declared that he would “deport” immigrants on a large scale from Springfield, a city he claimed had been “destroyed” by immigrants. However, city officials have expressed concern that Trump’s false information is causing unrest among residents and leading to threats of violence against schools and other institutions.
US President Joe Biden has criticized Trump’s comments, saying, “It’s got to stop. What he’s doing. It’s got to stop.” Biden also called Trump’s criticism of Haitian immigrants “totally wrong” and urged Americans to stay calm.
Trump’s claims about immigrants eating pets in Springfield have been denied by the city’s mayor, police chief, and Ohio’s governor. However, the false claims have been spread by other prominent figures, including Republican vice presidential nominee Senator J.D. Vance and billionaire Elon Musk.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has said that the story about immigrants killing pets and children in Springfield is “a story that came from the Internet, and the Internet can get crazy sometimes.” Mayor Lu of Springfield has also stated that there is “absolutely no truth” to the claims and that the city is unaware of any credible reports of pets being harmed by members of the immigrant community.
Incident in Another Town
Prior to Trump’s remarks, false claims about immigrants killing pets and children in Springfield had been spread by other prominent figures. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has said that the story is “a story that came from the Internet, and the Internet can get crazy sometimes.”
Mayor Lu of Springfield has stated that there is “absolutely no truth” to the claims and that the city is unaware of any credible reports of pets being harmed by members of the immigrant community. The mayor also explained that a recent incident involving a cat being killed was actually about a Canton woman who was arrested for animal cruelty, and not related to the immigrant community.
