Trump Unleashes Fury on Energy Policy, Germany Fires Back in Heated Debate
US Republican presidential candidate Trump criticized the German energy grid during a televised debate with his Democratic opponent Kamala Harris in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
At the end of the debate, Trump attacked Harris for refusing to use hydraulic fracturing to extract shale oil and using fossil fuels. He stated, “Germany tried to do that, but within a year they went back to building ordinary energy plants.”
The German Foreign Ministry responded on social media, saying, “Like it or not: Germany’s energy system is fully operational and more than 50% is renewable energy.” They also reminded Trump that “we are closing rather than building coal and nuclear power plants,” and that Germany had committed to “excepting (coal-fired) from the grid by 2038 at the latest.”
Germany has made significant progress in reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. In the first half of this year, renewable energy accounted for 61% of Germany’s total power generation, while coal accounted for only 23%.
A German government spokesman stated, “We have noticed (Trump’s comments) and are a little surprised” and added, “I don’t know what the presidential candidate meant by saying that.”
In response to Trump’s claim that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, stole pets and ate them as food, the German Foreign Ministry posted on social media, “Also: We don’t eat dogs or cats either.”
Springfield police have refuted the rumors, stating, “At this time, we have not received any reliable reports, and there are no concrete claims from the public that pets have been harmed or abused by people in the immigrant community.”
Germany’s Renewable Energy Progress
Germany’s commitment to renewable energy has led to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. The country aims to reduce its emissions by 80% by 2050.
Trump’s Energy Policy Criticism
Trump’s criticism of Germany’s energy policy has been met with skepticism by environmentalists and energy experts. Germany’s transition to renewable energy has been successful, and the country is now a leader in the field.
