Trump Violence Rhetoric: Mother Jones Analysis
Trump Threatens Protesters Amid California ICE Raid Tensions
Updated June 09, 2025
President Donald Trump escalated tensions Monday following weekend protests against ICE workplace raids in Los Angeles. The protests, which saw clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement, prompted Trump to take to social media with a threatening message.
“IF THEY SPIT, WE WILL HIT,” Trump wrote, promising a harsher response than ever before and decrying what he called “disrespect.” He also labeled the largely peaceful protesters “insurrectionists.” The statement echoed his 2020 remark, “when the looting starts, the shooting starts,” made during George Floyd protests.

Trump also voiced support for arresting California Gov. Gavin Newsom, despite Newsom not breaking any laws. “I would do it if I were Tom,” Trump saeid, referring to acting ICE director Tom Homan. Homan later appeared to walk back the idea, admitting there had been no serious discussion about arresting Newsom.
California has since sued the Trump administration, accusing it of manufacturing chaos for political gain. Trump’s threats of violence and talk of arresting a governor highlight what critics call authoritarian tendencies.
What’s next
The lawsuit filed by California against the Trump administration is expected to proceed, potentially setting up a legal battle over the limits of presidential power and federal immigration enforcement. The situation remains tense as the administration continues it’s crackdown on immigration, and further protests are anticipated.
