Trump vs UCLA: Lawsuit, Fine, and Newsom’s Response
Trump Administration Targets UCLA with Sweeping Demands Over Alleged Discrimination and Protests
Table of Contents
The Trump administration has proposed a sweeping agreement with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), demanding meaningful changes to campus policies regarding free speech, admissions, medical care, and reporting of donations. The move follows similar actions taken against Columbia and Brown universities, framed as efforts to combat antisemitism and protect civil rights.
A Barrage of Complaints and Investigations
The proposed agreement stems from a series of complaints and investigations into UCLA, including allegations of employment discrimination against Jews, civil rights complaints from Jewish students, and improper reporting of foreign donations. UCLA has faced the most charges from the government of any UC or public university.
A central point of contention is the 2024 pro-Palestinian encampment on campus, which sought university divestment from weapons companies linked to Israel’s war in Gaza. The encampment was the site of a violent overnight attack and subsequently led to a federal lawsuit filed by pro-Israel Jewish students who alleged UCLA enabled antisemitism by failing to shut down the protest, which they claimed obstructed access to campus. UCLA settled the suit for $6.45 million, including over $2 million in donations to Jewish nonprofits.
Trump’s Broader Agenda for Universities
The Trump administration’s actions reflect a broader effort to reshape American universities, which the former president has labeled “Marxist” strongholds of liberalism and anti-Israel sentiment. During a potential second term, the administration has indicated it would continue to suspend or cancel federal grants related to gender, LGBTQ+ issues, or campuses accused of antisemitism.Attacks on campus diversity programs and admissions practices, framed as illegal discrimination against white and Asian Americans, are also anticipated.
“This far-reaching penalty of defunding life-saving research dose nothing to address any alleged discrimination,” argued UCLA Chancellor gene Block in a recent campus letter, challenging the notion that cutting medical research protects Jewish people.
Specific Demands Facing UCLA
the Trump administration’s proposal includes a range of specific demands from UCLA:
end to race- or ethnicity-based scholarships: The administration seeks to eliminate scholarships prioritizing specific racial or ethnic groups.
Data sharing on admissions: UCLA would be required to share detailed admissions data with the federal government.
Revised protest rules: Changes to campus protest rules are demanded, likely further restricting demonstrations. restrictions on Gender-Affirming Care: The administration proposes that UCLA Health and the medical school cease providing gender-affirming care for transgender individuals.
UC System’s response and Political Implications
The University of California system has already implemented some changes aligned with the Trump administration’s concerns, including a ban on protest encampments and the elimination of diversity statements in the hiring process.
However, california Governor Gavin Newsom has publicly opposed yielding to Trump’s demands, stating that UC should not go “on their knees” to the former president. Newsom, a Democrat, has positioned himself as a national figure opposing Trump and is considering a presidential run in 2028.
The UC system operates independently under the state constitution, but the governor wields significant influence through appointments to the Board of Regents, on which he also holds an ex-officio seat. The Trump administration is also seeking an outside monitor to oversee the implementation of any agreement.
