Trump pardons Tax Evader After Mar-a-lago Fundraiser
Updated May 27, 2025
donald Trump recently issued a pardon to Paul Walczak, a former nursing home executive, who had been convicted of tax evasion. This action occurred weeks after Walczak’s mother, Elizabeth Fago, a socialite, attended a fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago where attendees paid $1 million each, according to The new York Times.
Walczak was found guilty of failing to remit over $10.9 million in taxes, using the funds instead for personal luxuries. last month, he received an 18-month prison sentance and was ordered to pay $4.4 million in restitution. He submitted his pardon application around Election Day in November 2024. Despite other pardons granted to MAGA supporters, his initial application was unsuccessful.
Fago was later invited to a fundraising dinner at Mar-a-Lago, where Trump appeared as a guest speaker. MAGA Inc., a super PAC capable of raising unlimited funds for Trump, hosted the event.
Less than three weeks following the dinner, Trump granted walczak the tax evasion pardon. Walczak’s initial application highlighted his mother’s history of raising millions for Trump and other Republicans. It suggested his prosecution was politically motivated, stemming from Fago’s political activities rather than his tax crimes. The application also claimed support for the pardon from Donald Trump Jr. and other allies, noting Fago’s involvement in publicizing Joe Biden’s daughter’s diary.
Fago, who has hosted multiple Trump campaign fundraisers, also attended VIP events at Trump’s 2017 and 2025 inaugurations. In 2020, Trump attempted to appoint her to the National Cancer Advisory Board. Prosecutors stated that walczak withheld $10.9 million from his employees’ paychecks for Social Security,Medicare, and federal income taxes, using the money for personal expenses, including a $2 million yacht.
A White House official told The New York Times that Walczak was “targeted by the Biden administration over his family’s conservative politics.”
The Trump pardon for Walczak is the latest instance of the Trump administration pardoning or terminating cases against his supporters.
Recently, Trump pardoned a former sheriff convicted of bribery for providing police badges in exchange for money. He also pardoned michele fiore, a Las Vegas city councilor convicted of wire fraud, and approximately 1,500 individuals involved in the jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, including those who committed violent acts.
