Britain’s efforts to strengthen economic ties with China are dangerous, US President Donald Trump has warned, as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer wraps up a visit to China.
In response to reporters’ questions about British efforts to strengthen ties with Beijing, Trump expressed frustration on Friday.
“Well, it’s very dangerous for them to do that, and I think it’s even more dangerous for Canada to engage in business with China,” the US president said.
Canada is doing badly, Trump argued, noting that Ottawa “can’t look to China as the solution.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited China in January, reaching a tentative agreement to reduce tariffs on some goods.
Trump later threatened Canada with 100% tariffs on exports if Ottawa struck a free trade deal with China, but Carney denied there were any such plans.
Before going to China, Starmer told the news agency “Bloomberg” that he did not have to choose between Washington and Beijing.
“I’m often asked to simply choose between countries. I don’t,” the prime minister said.
“We have a very close relationship with the US, of course we want and will maintain those deals, along with security and defense,” Starmer explained.
“Also, it would not be wise to simply bury your head in the sand and ignore China, knowing that it is the second largest economy in the world and there are business opportunities there,” said the Prime Minister.
