Trump Warns Minnesota Against Violence, Insurrection Act Concerns
Trump Threatens to Invoke Insurrection Act Amid Minneapolis Tensions
President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Minneapolis residents on Thursday, threatening to invoke the Insurrection Act following the shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent. The incident has fueled rising tensions between the city’s residents and immigration enforcement.
“If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don’t obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT,” Trump posted on his Truth Social account on January 14, 2026.
Trump has previously considered using The Insurrection Act of 1807, a federal law that allows the president to deploy military troops and federalize the National Guard to quell civil disorder or armed rebellion. Though, with escalating tensions in Minneapolis, his recent statements suggest a more serious intent.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz cautioned residents against escalating the situation, urging them not to give Trump justification to utilize the 1807 law. “Do not allow them to deploy federal troops in the air. Do not allow them to invoke the Insurrection Act,” Walz stated during a press conference on January 7, 2026.
The shooting of Renee Nicole Good, as reported by The Root, has been a central point of contention, contributing to the heightened unrest in Minneapolis.
