Trump Withdraws Jared Isaacman NASA Nomination Amid Musk Ties
Updated June 01, 2025
President Donald Trump has withdrawn his nomination of tech billionaire Jared Isaacman to head NASA, citing a “thorough review” of Isaacman’s “prior associations.” The declaration, made late Saturday, leaves the space agency’s leadership in question.
The White House has not yet clarified the reasons behind the decision. Trump stated on his social media platform that he would soon announce a new nominee who is “Mission aligned” and will “put America First in Space.”
Isaacman, 42, the CEO and founder of Shift4, a credit card processing company, has been closely associated with Elon Musk since 2021. He has purchased multiple spaceflights from SpaceX and conducted the first private spacewalk. SpaceX also holds critically important contracts with NASA,creating potential conflicts of interest.
The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee approved Isaacman’s nomination in late April, and a full Senate vote was anticipated. The sudden withdrawal casts doubt on the future leadership of the space agency.
Musk, a Trump adviser and SpaceX owner, expressed his disappointment on X, calling Isaacman “so competent and good-hearted.” Musk recently left his government position at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an agency created by Trump to reduce the size of government.

What’s next
The white House is expected to announce a new nominee for NASA administrator soon. The selection process will likely face increased scrutiny given the circumstances surrounding Isaacman’s withdrawal.
