The city of Springfield became famous after Donald Trump, in his only debate with Kamala Harris in the US presidential elections, mentioned fake news that had gone viral about Haitian immigrants eating pets in the city.
The now new president-elect was denounced live by the presenters and became a meme on social media. Even singer John Legend, who was born there, used his Instagram profile to talk about the cause.
Because of the rumour, the small town received 33 bomb threats in a few days; Colleges and hospitals suspended activities and police officers had to reinforce security in schools.
However, despite all the controversy created about the issue, Trump secured the preference of the majority of Springfield residents: he took 64.2% of the popular votes in Clark County, where the city is located, against 34.8% for Kamala. In the Senate race, Republican candidate Bernie Moreno also won in the county, with 58.4% of the vote.
During the campaign, the Republican promised to carry out “the largest mass deportation in the history of the United States” if elected and stated that it would start in Springfield. “We will have the largest deportation in the history of our country, and we will start with Springfield and Aurora,” he said.
After Trump’s victory, the American newspaper “The Washington Post” went to Springfield and talked to Haitians who live there. Everyone is worried about the victory of the former president and the promises he made.
“I have to trust in the Lord’s plan, even when it hurts”, Yvena Jean François laments. “I don’t know if I can continue to follow my dreams,” said François.
Most Haitians are in the United States legally, working in factories, but they are not citizens, so they have not been able to vote. In the city of Ohio alone, there are 12 thousand.
Throughout his campaign, the former president’s rhetoric was that US cities were “flooding with illegal immigrants”, coming “at unprecedented levels from prisons, jails, mental institutions and nursing homes”, until age with the allegations being baseless and denied by competent. authorities.
In a press conference in September, Trump said that undocumented immigrants and refugees are committing sexual violence and “taking Hispanic jobs, African-American jobs.”
The Republican also repeated accusations against Venezuelans, many of whom are in the country legally: “They cleaned their chains in Venezuela – they emptied their nests, so-called – of bad people. They are all now in the USA and taking over cities. It’s like an invasion.”
