Former president Donald Trump is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin at Joint Base elmendorf-Richardson, near Anchorage, Alaska, a senior White House official confirmed to CBS News Tuesday. The meeting comes amid ongoing efforts to find a path toward ending the war in Ukraine, and as discussions begin regarding a potential future meeting involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Location and Logistics of the Trump-Putin Meeting
Choosing a location for the high-stakes talks proved challenging, especially given Alaska’s peak tourist season.Security requirements further narrowed the options, ultimately leading to the selection of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. White House press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated Tuesday that the logistical details are ”still being ironed out.”
The meeting is being framed by the White House as an prospect for President Trump to gain a deeper understanding of the situation in Ukraine directly from Putin. Leavitt described it as “a listening exercise for the president,” emphasizing that only one party to the conflict – Russia – will be present.”This is for the president to go and to get, again, a more firm and better understanding of how we can hopefully bring this war to an end,” she explained.
Skepticism and concerns About Putin’s Intentions
Though, some observers are skeptical about the potential for productive dialog, given putin’s unwavering stance. Former NATO Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Sirreff, voiced concerns that Putin has not demonstrated any willingness to compromise. “Trump has obviously not been listening at all because it’s very clear – and Putin continues to make it clear – what his demands are, and he’s not stepped back one iota from his maximalist demands,” Shirreff said. “And those, as we’ve heard, are simply impossible for Ukraine to accept without capitulation.”
This raises questions about weather a meaningful breakthrough can be achieved without a shift in Putin’s position. The core issue remains Russia’s insistence on demands that Ukraine has repeatedly stated are non-negotiable.
Potential for a Three-Way Summit
Despite the skepticism, Trump expressed optimism about the meeting with Putin, describing it as potentially “constructive.” He also revealed plans to facilitate an in-person meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy, potentially including himself in the discussions.
“The next meeting will be with Zelenskyy and Putin or Zelenskyy and Putin and me,” Trump stated Monday. Sources familiar with the ongoing negotiations have indicated that the U.S. is actively working to secure a location for a Trump-Putin-Zelenskyy meeting as early as the end of next week.
The possibility of a three-way summit represents a notable development, though its feasibility hinges on a number of factors, including whether zelenskyy would agree to participate and whether Putin would be willing to engage in genuine negotiations. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether these efforts can pave the way for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
