Trump’s Envoy in Israel – Gaza Aid Crisis & Rising Death Toll
Israel Faces Growing Isolation as Allies Consider Recognizing Palestinian State
By Paul Adams, Diplomatic Correspondent
Two months ago, Israel’s opposition leader, Yair Golan, sparked outrage at home by stating his country was on a path to becoming an international pariah. This week, that trajectory appears to have substantially accelerated.
Fueled by widespread dismay over the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Gaza, several of israel’s traditional allies have begun channeling their concerns into concrete diplomatic action. Pledges, albeit conditional, to recognise the state of Palestine within the coming weeks have emerged from key European nations.
France,Britain, adn Canada have already publicly committed to this meaningful shift in policy. Furthermore, countries like Germany,Portugal, and Australia are actively engaged in discussions regarding similar recognition. In the complex world of international diplomacy, these are seismic developments, even if, as former US negotiator Dennis Ross observes, they are driven as much by prevailing emotions and domestic political considerations as by long-term strategic planning.
This growing international consensus suggests it’s not just Israel that is finding itself increasingly isolated on the global stage. The United States, too, is facing a similar predicament. By the time of the UN’s annual general Assembly gathering in September, the US is likely to be the sole dissenting voice among the five permanent members of the Security Council on this critical issue.Despite this evolving international landscape, the Trump administration has so far remained steadfast in its support for Israel. This stance is further evidenced by the imposition of sanctions on members of the Palestinian Authority, mirroring earlier sanctions placed on the international Criminal Court.
Both the US and Israel have articulated a position that recognizing a Palestinian state at this juncture would effectively reward Hamas for its brutal attacks in 2023.However, at a recent UN conference in New York, participants, including influential Arab governments, universally condemned Hamas. They issued clear calls for the group to disarm and relinquish its control over Gaza. The message from the international community is unequivocal: Hamas is being urged to step aside, rather than being rewarded.
