The promise of reconstruction and aid for Gaza is at the heart of a new initiative spearheaded by former U.S. President Donald Trump, unveiled through his self-created “Board of Peace.” While the plan proposes a $5 billion package for humanitarian relief and rebuilding efforts in the besieged territory, experts are questioning its long-term viability and suggesting a focus on short-term gains and political positioning.

The initial step, the formal launch of the “Board of Peace” in January, already raised eyebrows, with membership requiring a $1 billion contribution from participating nations over three years. On Thursday, the two dozen member states are scheduled to convene, with the stated aim of presenting the aid package. Trump announced the plan via his Truth Social platform, also mentioning the provision of personnel to support local police forces in Gaza. However, critics express concern that the initiative is designed to compete with, rather than complement, the work of the United Nations.

Trump’s penchant for attracting attention is well-documented, from threats of tariffs to the suggestion of purchasing Greenland. His “Board of Peace” appears to follow a similar pattern. He stated on his Truth Social account, “The Peace Board will become the most successful international body in history, and We see an honor to serve as its chairman,” a clear indication of where he positions himself within the hierarchy of international organizations.

Criticism of Trump’s Foreign Policy: “He never cares about real solutions.”

Ian Bremmer, a U.S. Political scientist and analyst, emphasized at the recent Munich Security Conference that Trump is not simply establishing a peace council for Gaza, but rather “a competitive model to the UN, which could potentially take over or displace parts of the functions of the Security Council.” Trump officially founded the “Board of Peace” at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Bremmer suggested that Trump could have achieved a significant success by presenting a “Peace Council for Gaza” on the global stage at Davos, potentially garnering widespread acclaim. “He could have used the most global stage. He probably would have received standing ovations. But he didn’t. He wanted it to be bigger,” Bremmer said. “He decided it had to be the ‘Peace Council’ – with a flag in purple and gold that looks very similar to the UN flag, but mainly depicts the Western Hemisphere.”

Stephan Bierling, a political scientist and author, echoed this sentiment, stating in an interview that Trump’s foreign policy is rarely focused on genuine solutions, “only on the show and the headlines.” The $5 billion aid package, while a starting point, falls short of the estimated $70 billion needed for reconstruction in the region. The specifics of how and for how long the deployed personnel will support local authorities remain undefined.

Trump’s need for a success story is particularly acute given the challenges he faces domestically. “Inflation remains high, new jobs are scarce, consumer confidence is at rock bottom, and elections like the one in Virginia and New Jersey last November were disastrously lost,” Bierling said. Controversies, including those surrounding the release of the Epstein files and allegations of brutality by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), further complicate the political landscape. These issues have already led to electoral defeats for the February 17, 2026 Republican Party. “Trump is likely to try to divert attention through foreign policy activity,” Bierling concluded.
