Japan is reportedly considering supporting the U.S. “Golden Dome” project, a missile defense system proposed by President Donald Trump. This potential collaboration comes after Prime Minister Shigeru ishiba and Trump discussed diplomatic and security challenges in recent phone calls.
The ”Golden Dome,” modeled after Israel’s Iron Dome, envisions a network of satellites, sensors, and interceptors to protect the U.S.from aerial attacks. The system’s estimated cost could reach hundreds of billions of dollars, with Trump aiming for operational status by 2029.

Ishiba addressed the May 29 call with Trump, stating that it was a “truly candid exchange of views” that deepened each leader’s understanding. He affirmed his commitment to reinforcing the Japan-U.S. alliance and fostering global peace and stability.
Facing increasing regional threats, Japan has been increasing its national security investments. Former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida unveiled a meaningful military buildup in December 2022, making Japan’s defense budget the third-largest globally.
The U.S. Space Force has lauded Japan as one of its “closest allies” as japan prioritizes space surveillance and security. Lt. Gen. David N. Miller Jr. of the U.S. Space Force emphasized the importance of partnerships in deterring conflict during a visit to Japan in febuary.
“I believe what you see from the United States is a recognition that throughout our history, we don’t go it alone when deterring conflict,” said U.S. Space Force Lt. Gen. David N. Miller Jr.
According to a policy memo by the Stimson Center, economic security is also an increasingly critically important area in the U.S.-Japan alliance. Japan may use its participation in the “Golden Dome” project as leverage in ongoing trade talks, seeking reduced tariffs.
