Trump’s State of the Union Guests: Who’s Coming & Who’s Skipping

Trump’s State of the Union Guests: Who’s Coming & Who’s Skipping

February 25, 2026 Dr. Jennifer Chen Health

President Trump delivered his State of the Union address on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, with a guest list reflecting a range of issues and political alignments. While the full list remained partially under wraps, several invitees and notable absences highlighted the current political landscape and ongoing national conversations.

Guests Reflecting Key Issues

Among those invited to attend were Saige Blair, a Virginia teenager at the center of a legal case concerning parental rights and schooling, and Erika Kirk, the widow of Charlie Kirk and current CEO of Turning Point USA. The inclusion of Blair underscores the administration’s focus on parental involvement in education, particularly regarding decisions about a child’s well-being and gender identity. According to the White House, President Trump intends to “call on Congress to ‘firmly reject political violence against our fellow citizens’” with Kirk in attendance.

First Lady Melania Trump also extended invitations to Sierra Burns, a participant in the Melania Trump Foster Youth to Independence Program, and Everest Nevraumont, a 10-year-old advocate for artificial intelligence education. These selections emphasize the First Lady’s priorities in supporting foster youth and promoting technological literacy.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson invited Ziba Murat, the daughter of Gulshan Abbas, a retired medical doctor who has been missing in China since 2018. This invitation brings attention to the treatment of Uyghur people and concerns about human rights in China, as highlighted by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom.

The U.S. Men’s hockey team, fresh off their gold medal victory at the recent Winter Olympics, was also invited, though the team was ultimately unable to attend due to prior commitments.

Several Democratic lawmakers chose to bring guests who have been impacted by issues they champion. Representative Mark Takano invited George Retes, a U.S. Citizen who alleges he was wrongly detained and pepper-sprayed by federal immigration agents. Representative Pete Stauber brought conservative Youtuber Nick Shirley, citing his role in uncovering alleged fraud within the state government. Several Democratic representatives invited survivors of abuse by Jeffrey Epstein, including Virginia Roberts Giuffre’s brother-in-law, Jess Michaels, and Haley Robson.

Political Boycott and Alternative Event

Traditionally, the State of the Union address is attended by members of both parties. However, this year saw a significant number of Democratic lawmakers opting to boycott the speech. At least five Democratic senators and fourteen members of the House chose to attend an alternative event, “The People’s State of the Union,” organized by MoveOn.org and MeidasTouch.

Several prominent Democratic senators announced their decision to skip the address. Senator Patty Murray of Washington plans to deliver a livestreamed address to her state instead. Senators Chris Van Hollen of Maryland and Adam Schiff of California will participate in “The People’s State of the Union” event. Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon also indicated he would not be in attendance.

Democratic Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, and others also announced their intention to attend the alternative event, citing opposition to President Trump’s agenda. The event aims to provide a counter-narrative to the President’s address and offer a platform for alternative perspectives.

Context and Significance

The guest list and attendance patterns at the State of the Union address often serve as a symbolic representation of the political climate and the issues at the forefront of national debate. This year’s event was no exception, with invitations extended to individuals involved in contentious legal battles, international human rights concerns, and high-profile Olympic achievements. The decision by a significant number of Democratic lawmakers to boycott the address and participate in an alternative event underscores the deep partisan divisions that continue to characterize American politics.

The inclusion of individuals like Saige Blair and Erika Kirk signals the administration’s intent to highlight specific policy priorities and appeal to its base. Similarly, the invitations extended by Democratic lawmakers reflect their commitment to advocating for issues such as immigration reform and support for survivors of abuse. The absence of many Democratic legislators, however, demonstrates a clear unwillingness to lend legitimacy to the President’s agenda.
