Zelensky’s Domestic Weakness and ukrainian Resolve

Volodymyr Zelensky is not in a position to‌ offer concessions. Domestically, Ukraine’s president faces challenges stemming from⁤ a failed government attempt to control a‍ corruption⁣ watchdog that had begun scrutinizing his political allies. Even if he were in a ⁢stronger domestic ⁣position, Ukrainians have endured too much pain inflicted ⁢by the Kremlin ⁤to offer concessions significant enough‌ to satisfy a ⁢russian president ⁢who will likely demand more. Moreover, Ukrainians harbor deep distrust⁣ towards Putin and ‍future Russian leaders, making them ‌unlikely to believe promises to end the current fighting.

Trump’s Limited Leverage and EU Sanctions’ ‍Ineffectiveness

Donald Trump lacks the leverage to alter the current dynamics.⁤ The direct‍ trade flow between ⁢the U.S. and Russia ⁤is insufficient for credible ‌threats. While Trump⁣ has ‌alluded to possible tariffs ⁢on countries trading ⁢with Russia, ⁢putin has valid ‍reasons to doubt Trump’s commitment ‍to new confrontations with China and India, ⁤Russia’s primary energy customers. ‍This doubt is ⁢amplified ‍by Trump’s efforts to secure notable trade deals with both nations.

European Union sanctions, even with their 18th package, are unlikely to sway Putin’s strategic calculations. The adjustable oil price cap, a key ‍tool in the EU’s sanctions regime, will likely compel Russian‍ oil exporters to increase their reliance on the shadow ⁤fleet‍ of tankers used to circumvent such caps. Though, without robust U.S. backing, the impact of these sanctions will be ⁢minimal. the EU ⁣also possesses limited capacity to impede Russia’s‌ defense sector.

Shifting Dynamics‌ of Pressure on Zelensky

Trump’s ability to pressure Zelensky appears less potent than it did just weeks ago. The ever-changing and‍ seemingly contradictory tactical approaches to both⁢ Ukraine and ‌Russia suggest that the U.S. president might alter his stance again. Both Putin⁢ and Zelensky are aware that Trump’s attention is ‍currently divided among numerous other pressing issues.

putin’s Strategic ‌Miscalculations ⁣and the Cost of War

There is another potential reason for Putin’s decision ⁤to ‍prolong ‍this increasingly‌ costly war ‍of attrition. His⁣ confidence in continuing the conflict might be another‌ item‌ on a growing list of strategic errors. The initial invasion itself was a profound misjudgment of ⁣both russian and Ukrainian capabilities.

Perhaps Putin is not pursuing ⁤a deal ‌because he still fails to grasp the full extent of ⁣what Russia ⁤stands to lose.
