Imagine walking through downtown New York and stumbling upon 100 majestic elephants. This surreal scene is not a figment of your imagination, but rather an installation art piece from India, designed to promote peaceful coexistence between humans and animals.
The installation, titled “The Great Elephant Migration,” features 100 life-sized elephant replicas, each uniquely crafted to mirror the diverse appearance of elephants living in South India. The elephants are made from the plant Lantana and were hand-built by approximately 200 Indian artists over several years.
According to Tarsh Thekaekara, the organizer of the event, “Elephants are a symbol of coexistence between humans and wildlife. The idea is that if people in rural India can live peacefully with elephants, then surely people elsewhere can also coexist with smaller, less dangerous animals.”
Julie Henry, a communications specialist at North Carolina State University, expressed her amazement at the installation, saying, “It’s really amazing to actually see them now, to see the expressions in their eyes and the diversity of their appearance.”
The Great Elephant Migration will be touring the United States, starting in Rhode Island and currently on display in New York City until October 20. After the tour, the elephants will be sold for between $8,000 and $22,000 each, with the proceeds going to animal protection groups to support the conservation of elephant ecology in South India.
This unique art installation serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of coexisting with animals and the natural world. By promoting empathy and understanding, The Great Elephant Migration aims to inspire a more harmonious relationship between humans and wildlife.
