A-Klasse and Singles Draws Face Low Turnout Among Women
Tournament organizers registered 139 entries in the singles competitions by Thursday morning ahead of the weekend matches. Women’s and girls’ categories experienced particularly low participation rates, recording just seven total entries in the youth sector by Thursday. In the Damen A-Klasse, Pia Segref of TTV Altfinnentrop, formerly of Valbert, and Annabell Steiner of TTC Volkringhausen stand as the only registered competitors.
Youth and Senior Division Breakdown
Competition opens Friday at 18:30 with 22 senior athletes spread across five classes ranging from Senioren 40 up to Senioren 80, where five older competitors contest the title. Busch notes that mandatory tournament licenses continue to deter older athletes, which could force tournament officials to combine classes.
Men’s A-Klasse Top Favorites and Qualification Stakes
Sunday features the Erwachsenen A division as the headline event of the tournament. Alexander Lübke of TTG Menden enters as the top favorite for the district title, holding a TTR rating of 2108 as the only player in the field exceeding 2000 points. Challengers from the former Lüdenscheid district include Markus Born of TuS Halver alongside Arnd Katzke and Martin Werthmann of TTSG Lüdenscheid, alongside Marc Leon Sänger representing the host club TTC Altena. Late entries remain open through the tournament desk up to 45 minutes before each respective class begins. District champions in the Damen A and Erwachsenen A singles advance directly to the West German Individual Championships, while senior champions secure tickets to the West German Senior Individual Championships.
