The Neue Mensa on the campus of the Technische Universität (TU) Dresden officially reopened its doors on March 31, 2026, following a period of extensive renovation. The operational opening was preceded by a ceremonial event on March 30, 2026, which was attended by high-ranking political figures.
Located at Bergstraße 51, 01069 Dresden, the facility serves as a listed building that integrates historic architecture with modern university catering standards. The reopening marks the return of a central hub for students after the facility had been closed for more than 11 years.
Capacity and Facility Specifications
The renovated canteen features a new kitchen capable of serving approximately 4,200 meals per day. The facility is designed to accommodate a large volume of students through various dining and social areas. The seating capacity is distributed as follows:
- 723 seats within the primary dining halls
- 100 outside seats at the Bierstube
- 80 seats in the Bierstube
- 80 outside seats on the terrace
- 48 seats in multipurpose rooms
Beyond its primary function as a dining hall, the Neue Mensa is designed to provide space for exchange, culture, and various university events.
Historical Context and Renovation Timeline
The Neue Mensa was originally constructed between 1975 and 1981 as an adaptive reuse project reflecting GDR university architecture. At the time of its initial design, the canteen was planned to have a capacity of around 5,000 meals and was intended to function as a hub for both dining and social interaction.

The facility was closed in 2014, leading to a long-term absence of the central meeting point on the campus. Comprehensive renovation work officially began in 2020 to modernize the infrastructure while preserving the architectural heritage of the listed building.
Operational Hours and Services
The facility offers several distinct dining and lounge areas with specific operating hours from Monday to Friday:
- Mittagstisch (Lunch): 11:00 to 15:00
- Cafeteria: 08:00 to 15:00
- Kaffeelounge: 11:00 to 16:00
- Bierstube: 15:30 to 22:00
Management of the facility is led by Serviceleiter Lutz Höhne and Küchenleiter Marco Krause.
Development of the Bierstube
A significant component of the reopening is the evolution of the Bierstube. In March 2025, it was announced that the Studentenwerk and student clubs would collaborate through a newly founded association to develop the legendary Bierstube into a specialized location for student relaxation and well-being.
This new concept includes the introduction of the Katzenstube
, which was planned for an autumn opening. The development of this space has been a point of focus for the Studierendenrat (StuRa) of TU Dresden, specifically regarding how beer and culture can be integrated into the social fabric of the Neue Mensa.
The reintegration of the Bierstube is viewed as a return of a vital social element to the campus, providing a space where students can engage in cultural activities and social exchange outside of traditional academic hours.
