Tube Fare Evasion Prosecutions Rise to 2019 Levels
TfL Cracks Down on Fare Evasion with Expanded Investigator Team
transport for london (TfL) is intensifying its efforts to combat fare evasion, a persistent issue across the capital’s transport network. The institution has announced a significant expansion of its professional investigator team, aiming to target and deter those who deliberately avoid paying their fares.
Tackling the Problem Head-On
Siwan Hayward, TfL’s director of security, policing, and enforcement, emphasized that while the vast majority of passengers are honest, fare evasion is “unacceptable.” This new initiative is designed to bolster TfL’s existing capabilities in detecting and preventing fare evasion.
Strengthening Deterrence and Detection
“we are strengthening our capability to deter and detect fare evaders,” Hayward stated. The expansion of the investigator team will allow TfL to focus on the “most prolific fare evaders across the network.” This targeted approach is a key component of their strategy to ensure a fairer system for all.
This initiative builds upon the substantial presence of uniformed officers already working to maintain safety and order. TfL currently deploys over 500 uniformed officers across the network. These officers are instrumental in addressing fare evasion and other forms of antisocial behavior, contributing to a safer habitat for both staff and passengers.
The move signals TfL’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its fare system and ensuring that revenue is used effectively to support the services Londoners rely on.
