Tuberculosis Cases Rise 5% in Surabaya, Prompting City Action
Surabaya, Indonesia - Tuberculosis (TB) cases in Surabaya have seen a concerning 5% increase in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to the Surabaya City Health department.
From January to November 2024, a total of 10,741 cases were recorded, marking a significant jump from 2023 figures.
“This represents a 5% increase compared to the same period in 2023,” stated Nanik Sukristina, Head of the Surabaya City Health Department.Alarmingly,cases among children aged 1-14 years old also rose,accounting for 1,327 or 42.6% of the total cases detected by November 31, 2024. This falls short of the 2024 target of 3,113 cases.
Nanik explained that TB is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, wich primarily attacks the lungs but can spread to other organs like lymph nodes, kidneys, bones, and the nervous system.
“Transmission occurs through airborne droplets released when an infected person coughs,sneezes,or talks,” she clarified.In response to the rising numbers, the Surabaya City Government is taking proactive steps to combat the spread of TB.
Key initiatives include:
Active Case Finding: Collaborating with various sectors to conduct early detection activities and investigate at least eight close contacts of each confirmed case.
Integrated Health Screening: Implementing screening programs in workplaces, government offices, schools, and high-risk communities.
Partnership with UNAIR: Working with the University of Airlangga (UNAIR) on a programme focused on tackling childhood TB.
Expanding TB Service Network: Establishing partnerships with hospitals, clinics, and the Surabaya Health Department to broaden access to TB care.
* Policy Progress: Drafting local regulations to accelerate TB control efforts and create a comprehensive action plan.
These measures aim to curb the spread of TB and ensure timely diagnosis and treatment for those affected.
