Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) arrested Tulungagung Regent Gatut Sunu Wibowo and 15 other individuals during a sting operation, known as an Operasi Tangkap Tangan (OTT), on Friday, April 10, 2026.
KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo confirmed the arrests to reporters, stating that the team secured a total of 16 people. The operation has resulted in the detention of the regent and several other high-ranking officials from the regional administration.
Scope of the Investigation
The KPK operation targeted a suspected network of graft that spans from the highest office in the regency to civil service enforcement and hospital management. Investigators have seized digital evidence, including mobile phones from members of the Satpol PP (Civil Service Police Unit).
The anti-corruption agency is currently conducting intensive examinations of key figures to determine the full extent of the financial irregularities. Those under scrutiny include several Heads of Division (Kabag) and the Director of the Regional General Hospital (RSUD) of Tulungagung.
The involvement of health sector leadership suggests the suspected corruption may be linked to the misappropriation of public health funds, hospital staffing, or the procurement of medical equipment.
Legal Proceedings and Timeline
Following the arrests on April 10, Gatut Sunu Wibowo was transported to Jakarta and arrived at the KPK’s Red and White Building (Gedung Merah Putih). The KPK has a window of 24 hours to determine the legal status of the arrested parties in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP).

Reports indicate that the KPK also secured cash during the operation. In addition to the regent, 11 other local government officials from Tulungagung were brought to Jakarta for further questioning.
Broader Context of 2026 KPK Operations
This operation follows a series of high-profile arrests by the KPK in early 2026 targeting regional leaders and tax officials:
- Between January 9 and 10, 2026, eight people were arrested regarding alleged bribery in tax examinations at the North Jakarta Medium Tax Service Office of the Ministry of Finance for the period 2021-2026.
- On January 19, 2026, the KPK arrested Madiun Mayor Maidi. He was announced as a suspect on January 20, 2026, for alleged extortion involving CSR funds, project rewards, and other gratuities within the Madiun City Government.
- On January 19, 2026, the KPK arrested Pati Regent Sudewo. On January 20, 2026, he was named a suspect in alleged extortion related to the appointment of village officials in the Pati Regency Government.
- On February 4, 2026, a fourth operation took place at the Banjarmasin Medium Tax Office in South Kalimantan concerning the tax restitution process.
The recent arrest of the Tulungagung Regent highlights the KPK’s ongoing efforts to address corruption at the regency level, where local leaders maintain significant control over procurement and budgets.
