Tummy Tuck & Weight Loss: 5-Year Results
Tummy tuck Patients Continue to Lose Weight for Years After Surgery, Study Finds
patients undergoing abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, not only maintain weight loss but often continue to shed pounds – up to ten pounds on average – for as long as five years post-surgery, according to a new study published in the July issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
The research, led by John Y.S. Kim of Northwestern University Feinberg School of medicine, Chicago, suggests that the benefits of abdominoplasty extend beyond cosmetic improvements, perhaps contributing to sustained weight management, particularly for individuals with a higher initial body mass index (BMI).
A Common Procedure with Lasting Effects
Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat and tightening abdominal muscles. In 2023 alone, ASPS Member Surgeons performed over 170,000 abdominoplasties, frequently in patients following meaningful weight loss who are left with excess, sagging skin. While plastic surgeons have long observed continued weight loss in abdominoplasty patients, robust research supporting this phenomenon - and whether the surgery itself plays a role – has been limited.
Study Details and Findings
To investigate, Dr. Kim and his team analyzed data from 188 patients (97% women) who underwent abdominoplasty between 2018 and 2022. The average preoperative weight was 168 pounds with a BMI of 27.7. The majority of patients also underwent concurrent liposuction or lipectomy (removal of excess fat). Researchers tracked weight trends for up to five years after surgery.
The results revealed a consistent pattern of continued weight loss. Patients experienced an average loss of five to six pounds, and a roughly 3% decrease in BMI, within three to six months of surgery. This trend continued, with an additional five-pound weight loss and a 2% BMI reduction observed between one and four years post-surgery. Notably, patients followed for the full five years experienced an average weight loss of nearly ten pounds, accompanied by a more than 5% decrease in BMI.Approximately 60% of patients lost weight during the follow-up period, and the researchers observed a “near constant negative change in body weight” that didn’t diminish considerably over time.
Who Benefits Most?
Further analysis identified several factors associated with greater weight loss.Older patients, those who underwent liposuction/lipectomy alongside abdominoplasty, and non-smokers were more likely to experience continued weight loss. importantly, the study found that patients with higher preoperative weight and BMI experienced greater weight loss, as did a small group utilizing the weight loss medication semaglutide.
The researchers emphasize that this study provides quantifiable evidence that “post-abdominoplasty weight reduction is a real phenomenon,” and that patients continue to lose a significant amount of weight for up to five years after the procedure.
why the Continued Weight Loss?
While the study doesn’t definitively pinpoint the cause of continued weight loss, the authors suggest a link to lifestyle changes. “We have found that patients who were able to achieve weight loss after their abdominoplasty succeeded in developing healthy habits that centered around nutrition and exercise,” they write.
The team calls for the development of an ”evidence-based platform” to better assess weight changes following abdominoplasty and to identify factors that contribute to long-term weight loss success. They acknowledge limitations of the study, including variations in follow-up times and potential confounding variables.
