Tupperware’s Bankruptcy Filing Sparks Buying Frenzy in Vietnam
The news of Tupperware’s bankruptcy filing has sent shockwaves among Vietnamese housewives, prompting them to rush to buy the company’s products.
Tupperware’s Struggles and Bankruptcy Filing
Tupperware, a renowned household brand from the US, has filed for bankruptcy protection after years of struggling with poor business results. The decline in demand for food containers and continuous losses have made it impossible for the company to survive.
Vietnamese Housewives Rush to Buy Tupperware Products
Upon hearing the news, many Vietnamese housewives have expressed regret and are rushing to buy Tupperware products before they run out. Ms. Nguyen Hang, a resident of Nam Tu Liem district in Hanoi, is one such customer. She uses Tupperware plastic containers to store food in her refrigerator’s cool and freezer compartments due to their airtight and safe plastic design.
“I took the opportunity to buy a few more plastic containers for later use. The company’s products are quite expensive but very durable. I just bought a set of 5 1-liter plastic containers that were discounted from over 600,000 VND to 400,000 VND,” she said.
Online Sellers Offer Tupperware Products at Discounted Prices
Social media groups have seen a surge in posts selling Tupperware products at “super cheap” prices, attracting many buyers. However, the prices advertised online are only 1/3, or even 1/5, of the prices in official stores. For example, a set of 6 plastic boxes with a capacity of 0.7 liters costs only 239,000 VND; a set of 9 boxes with a capacity of 1 liter costs only 345,000 VND.
According to some sellers, these are processed products imported from China, not genuine products.
Genuine Tupperware Stores in Vietnam Offer Promotions
Records at some genuine Tupperware stores in Hanoi show that most of these units are implementing promotional programs from August 30. For example, at the store on Giap Nhat Street (Thanh Xuan District), many plastic boxes are discounted up to 78%.
Ms. Lam, the store owner, said that this promotion program has been running since the end of last month, not after the news of the company filing for bankruptcy protection. “On average, every month, there will be a different promotion program, depending on the product and the discount level,” she said.
Tupperware Vietnam Assures Normal Operations
Ms. Lam affirmed that Tupperware stores in Vietnam are still operating normally. “The bankruptcy filing in the US is understood to be to attract new investors and protect the brand, not to declare bankruptcy as many people think,” she said, adding that in the past half month, the amount of goods in stock has decreased compared to before due to problems with transportation.
According to the owner of this store, after the news of the company filing for bankruptcy protection, the number of customers looking to buy the product increased compared to normal days. Some customers even asked to buy online but were mistakenly sent fake products at deep discounts, but Ms. Lam affirmed that the genuine store does not have such cheap prices.
Tupperware Vietnam Warns Against Counterfeit Products
A representative of Tupperware Vietnam said that the Tupperware company in the US filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 (US bankruptcy law) – to restructure and maintain operations. Currently, Tupperware Vietnam is still operating normally. During this sensitive time, users should buy products at genuine stores to ensure quality and avoid counterfeit goods.
