Mark Cavendish Takes on the WRC: A Thrilling Experience
Mark Cavendish, a renowned British cyclist with 35 Tour de France stage wins under his belt, recently paid a visit to the Acropolis Rally of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) in Greece. On September 4, the day before the rally’s opening day, Cavendish embarked on a thrilling adventure, cycling through the picturesque Greek countryside with top drivers Sébastien Ogier (France) and Dani Sordo (Spain). He then took the navigator seat of a rally car for a shakedown run with Ogier at the wheel.
“It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had,” Cavendish exclaimed. “Riding alongside the best racing driver in the world at full speed was incredible. Cyclists think they could do the Tour de France, and car drivers think they could drive a rally car, but when you experience it for yourself, you realize they’re completely different. Both sports share a common thread, though – they’re supported by fans along the roadside, who get to be as close as possible to the action. It’s special, and you have to be humble; it’s real in sport.”
Ogier, who rode with Cavendish, shared his thoughts on the experience: “It was a great experience. I love sharing experiences with athletes from other sports. This time, it was a road racing legend, and the record he set was incredible. My legs are a little sore today, but I think Mark’s heart is still pounding in his chest.”

The Acropolis Rally has just kicked off, with Ogier, currently second in the overall annual rankings, setting the fastest time in SS1. Cavendish, who has not participated in any races since the Tour de France, has an undecided schedule. He plans to conclude his illustrious career by racing in the Singapore Criterium and Saitama Criterium of the Tour de France.
