Analogue Duo Revives TurboGrafx-16, PC Engine Game Libraries
Updated June 14, 2025
Retro gaming enthusiasts can rejoice as the Analogue Duo offers a fresh way to experience classic TurboGrafx-16 and PC Engine titles. The system allows gamers to revisit the software libraries of these classic consoles.
the PC Engine, launched in Japan in 1987,utilized HuCards for game storage. While technically an 8-bit system, it featured two 16-bit graphics processors, enabling it to rival the Super Famicom. When it arrived in the West in 1988, it was rebranded as the TurboGrafx-16.
The TurboGrafx-16 and PC Engine excelled at delivering near-perfect arcade ports. One notable example is R-Type, initially split across two HuCards.
The Duo enhanced both systems by incorporating a CD-ROM drive, which allowed for games with improved audio and graphics. This also enabled titles like R-Type to combine its two HuCards onto a single CD with a new soundtrack.
The Analogue duo employs a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), similar to other Analogue retro consoles. This means the system runs games natively, rather than emulating them. This is a key feature, as original PC Engine hardware, especially the portable PC Engine GT, has become increasingly unreliable.
The Analogue Duo allows gamers to play classic HuCard and CD-ROM games on modern displays at 1080p. Games like Macross 2036, a shoot ’em up title, are tough to find and play on original hardware.
Analogue’s FPGA-based systems help preserve classic consoles like the PC Engine and TurboGrafx-16. The PC Engine’s early adoption of CD-ROM technology influenced Nintendo’s collaboration with Sony, which ultimately led to the creation of the original Nintendo PlayStation.
The Analogue Duo is available for $249.99. The 8BitDo PC Engine Mini controller, which is wirelessly compatible, sells for $24.24.
What’s next
The Analogue Duo ensures that the legacy of the TurboGrafx-16 and PC Engine lives on, offering both seasoned fans and new players a chance to experience these classic games in a modern and reliable format.
