East Hartford,Conn. — the U.S. men’s national team (USMNT),in a Gold Cup preparation match, suffered a 2-1 defeat against turkey at Pratt & Whitney Stadium on Saturday. The Americans, fielding an experimental lineup, struggled to maintain their early lead.
Jack McGlynn put the USMNT ahead in the first minute. though,Turkey responded wiht goals from Arda Güler and Kerem aktürkoglu in the 24th and 27th minutes, respectively, seizing the momentum.
The USMNT’s next match is against Switzerland in Nashville, Tennessee, on June 10, their final tune-up before the Gold Cup.
The experimental USMNT squad, with an average age of 23.8, struggled against a determined Turkish side. Turkey won more duels and aerial battles, exposing vulnerabilities in the American lineup. The USMNT failed to recover mentally after conceding the two rapid goals.
Coach Mauricio Pochettino faces challenges in finding the right combinations and instilling a stronger mentality within the team. The absence of key players such as Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie was noticeable, leaving gaps in leadership and experience.
Patrick Agyemang, starting as striker in his hometown, had a difficult match. Despite his physicality, his touch was often lacking, and he failed to create significant scoring opportunities. Haji Wright was deployed out wide and had limited impact, while Brian White barely touched the ball after coming on as a substitute.

Johnny Cardoso’s struggles in the midfield continued. His errant pass led directly to Turkey’s first goal, shaking the team’s confidence. Luca de la Torre showed promise with his passing accuracy, but the midfield lacked steel untill Tyler Adams replaced Cardoso in the second half.
The inexperienced fullbacks, Max Arfsten and alexander Freeman, also faced challenges. Arfsten struggled with duels and crosses, while Freeman’s debut was average, allowing Turkey to launch dangerous counterattacks. The lack of cohesion in defense put pressure on Chris Richards and Miles Robinson in the center.
The USMNT never mentally recovered after conceding those first-half goals… it will be manager Mauricio Pochettino’s responsibility to find other members of this makeshift roster who were expected to and “fight for a place” in the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
What’s next
Pochettino will need to make adjustments before the match against Switzerland. Giving Damion Downs a chance or shifting Wright into a central role could provide a spark to the attack. The USMNT needs to find more chemistry and resolve defensive issues to improve their Gold Cup chances.
