Key Advancement Aims to Stabilize Syrian Energy Infrastructure Amidst Post-Conflict Rebuilding
Kilis, Türkiye – August 2, 2025 - Türkiye officially launched a meaningful natural gas supply from Azerbaijan to Syria today, a move poised to invigorate Syria’s war-ravaged energy sector and support its ongoing reconstruction. The ceremony, held in Kilis near the Syrian border, was attended by Türkiye’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov, syria’s Energy Minister Mohammed al-Bashir, and the Director General of Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) Fahad Hamad Hassan Al-Sulait.
Azerbaijan’s Gas to Fuel Syrian Power generation
The initiative, a crucial component of broader efforts to normalize Syria, is expected to deliver up to two billion cubic metres of natural gas annually. This vital resource will be instrumental in reactivating Syria’s power plants, which have been severely impacted by years of civil conflict.
“In the initial phase, up to two billion cubic metres of natural gas per year could be exported to Syria,” stated Minister Bayraktar during the ceremony. He emphasized that the gas would be directed towards powering a plant with a capacity of approximately 1,200 megawatts,a capacity sufficient to meet the electricity needs of roughly five million households.
The gas will be transported through existing pipelines, with initial distribution planned for Aleppo and afterward homs. “we will transport natural gas to Aleppo and from Aleppo to Homs. This will enable the power plants there to be put into operation in the near future,” Bayraktar added, highlighting the immediate impact on critical infrastructure.
qatar’s Financial Support Underpins the Initiative
The gas supply is part of a larger Qatari scheme aimed at bolstering Syria’s energy infrastructure through financial assistance. This latest development builds upon a previous phase of the Qatari project, which commenced in March and facilitated electricity supply to Syria via Jordan, providing an additional 400 megawatts of power daily.
Syria’s current islamist authorities, who assumed control in December, are prioritizing the rebuilding of the nation’s infrastructure. The chronic power outages, which have seen daily blackouts exceeding 20 hours, have severely hampered daily life and economic recovery efforts. The influx of natural gas is anticipated to significantly alleviate these challenges, providing a stable and reliable energy source for the war-torn country.
the collaboration between Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Qatar, with Syria as the beneficiary, underscores a concerted regional effort to support syria’s transition towards stability and reconstruction.the successful implementation of this natural gas supply marks a significant step forward in addressing the country’s pressing energy needs.
