Turkey’s enterprising program to develop its own fifth-generation fighter jet, the Kaan, is progressing toward intensive flight testing in 2026, with plans already underway for a potential sixth-generation successor.Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) detailed the program’s status at a panel discussion on August 29, 2025, outlining key milestones and future ambitions.
Kaan Prototype Development and Testing Schedule
Two new Kaan prototypes are slated to begin flight tests in April and May 2026, marking “the begining of intensive flight testing,” according to TAI officials. These prototypes will be significantly more advanced than the initial P0 Kaan prototype, which completed two flights in 2024. The new aircraft will incorporate a greater number of mission systems representative of the final operational configuration.
A total of six prototypes are planned to support the comprehensive flight testing program. Construction of these prototypes is taking place on TAI’s newly completed Kaan assembly line, which utilizes a novel vertical or upright assembly process for major components. This includes the 14-meter (46-foot) wingspan, 3.3-metric-ton wing, and the center fuselage section.
Production Plans and Initial Requirements
TAI has received an initial requirement for 148 kaan aircraft from the turkish government. However, it remains unclear whether this figure encompasses the 48 aircraft Indonesia has committed to purchase as reported by reuters on august 17,2024,or if it solely represents the initial needs of the Turkish Air Force.
Replacing the F-16 and Future Production Capacity
The Kaan is intended to replace the Turkish Air Force’s aging fleet of Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcons. The first batch of approximately 20 Kaan aircraft, designated Blk. 10, is expected to enter service in 2029. These initial aircraft will have a limited operational envelope, which will be progressively expanded as flight testing yields data and refinements.
TAI’s Ankara factory currently has the capacity to produce eight kaan aircraft per year. However, company officials are evaluating the necessary expansion of facilities to achieve full-rate production and meet the anticipated demand. Defense Aerospace reported on August 30, 2025 that TAI is considering significant investment in infrastructure to scale up production.
Looking Ahead: Sixth-Generation Fighter Exploration
TAI is already initiating research and development efforts for a potential sixth-generation fighter aircraft. “We may not be the first [in terms of developing a sixth-generation fighter] but we will be a pioneer,” stated TAI General Manager Temel Kotil (Demiroglu in the original text – corrected based on consistent reporting) during the panel session. He described TAI as being “
