Türkiye: Democracy & Counter-Terrorism Initiative
Türkiye’s Anti-Terrorism Initiative aims to Boost Democracy, Development
Updated May 30, 2025
Türkiye’s initiative to end terrorism is expected to create opportunities to elevate democratic and developmental standards, according to Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz. He highlighted the potential benefits following the PKK’s proclamation that it would dissolve after a 40-year terror campaign.
Yılmaz told Tvnet that eliminating terror would foster an environment to raise democratic and developmental standards, contributing significantly to Türkiye’s growth and strength. The focus now is on implementing the PKK’s decision to disarm and disband.
He assured that mechanisms are in place to monitor developments, emphasizing Türkiye’s experience in counterterrorism, supported by intelligence units, foreign missions, and security forces. The government is closely monitoring and reporting developments in the field.
The initiative gained momentum after Devlet Bahçeli, leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), urged the PKK’s jailed leader, Abdullah Öcalan, to call for disarmament. This led to visits by People’s Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) lawmakers to Öcalan, and eventually, a PKK “congress.”
Reports indicate PKK members are expected to hand over weapons within four months, with about 3,500 terrorists leaving hideouts in northern Iraq. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Turkish authorities are discussing next steps, including with Syrian representatives.
Türkiye expects the PKK’s dissolution to include all affiliated groups, particularly the YPG in Syria. The YPG, backed by the U.S. in northern Syria, agreed in March to disband and join Syrian state institutions, though implementation details remain unclear.
Ankara insists the YPG fulfill the March deal, emphasizing the need for a unified government and armed force for stability in Syria. The country’s anti-terrorism efforts are seen as key to unlocking further democratic and economic progress.
what’s next
Turkish authorities will continue to monitor the disarmament and disbanding process, engaging with regional actors to ensure a comprehensive resolution and lasting stability.
