According to an analysis of satellite data conducted by UCLA’s STOP Methane Project cited by The Guardian, Turkmenistan topped global rankings for industrial methane leak sources. Researchers utilizing data from the Carbon Mapper satellite system identified 4,400 significant methane emissions in 2025, defining significant leaks as those releasing at least 100 kilograms per hour. Out of the world’s 25 largest methane plumes identified in the oil and gas sector, 15 were detected at facilities inside Turkmenistan. The United Nations Methane Alert and Response System (Mars) issued 192 alerts to Turkmenistan over the preceding year, noting that the country accounted for three of the six worst global leaks in a six-month window and nine of the top 50 worldwide. Each of the top 25 plumes carries a climate warming impact comparable to an entire coal-fired power station.Aging Infrastructure and Economic Incentives
