Tusk Government Survives Poland Vote of Confidence Amidst Political Challenges
Updated June 11, 2025
Poland’s coalition government, led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, has survived a crucial vote of confidence in
the SEJM, the lower house of Parliament. The vote, held Wednesday, saw 243 deputies supporting Tusk’s
leadership, while 210 voted against. This victory comes after a disappointing result in the recent presidential
elections, where nationalist Karol Nawrocki, backed by the Law and Justice (PIS) party, narrowly won.
Tusk called for the vote to reaffirm his government’s mandate and address growing uncertainties. “I needed
this vote for obvious reasons,” Tusk stated after the vote. “It was speculated on whether the government would
survive, and it is difficult to work in these conditions.” He urged his team to focus on the remaining two and
a half years of the legislature and to address the challenges facing Poland.
During his address,Tusk highlighted key achievements of his government, including increased defense spending
by 67% and a 50% reduction in visa approvals for immigrants from Africa and Asia. He also emphasized efforts to
strengthen the border fence with Belarus and improve Poland’s economic competitiveness. However, he acknowledged
that many of the 100 promises made during his initial campaign remain unfulfilled.
The opposition, led by Jaroslaw Kaczynski of PIS, seized the opportunity to criticize Tusk’s leadership,
accusing him of subservience to Germany and undermining Poland’s independence. Kaczynski also raised concerns
about alleged ancient losses in state companies and reductions in religion classes in schools. Pismyslaw
Czarnek, former Minister of Education, questioned Tusk’s integrity and called for his resignation.
“All those who are willing to advance with me, with the Government, irrespective of momentary emotions, and to
build a better Poland, must vote today in favor of the vote of trust,” Tusk urged.
Despite the vote of confidence, Tusk faces notable challenges ahead. The liberal coalition holds a slim
majority of 242 seats out of 460 in the SEJM. The rise of ultranationalist Karol Nawrocki, who will assume the
presidency in August, further complicates the political landscape. Nawrocki’s potential use of legislative veto
power could hinder the government’s ability to implement key reforms and fulfill its promises to the European
union.
What’s next
Looking ahead, Tusk plans to restructure the Council of Ministers in July, reducing the number of ministries and
introducing new faces. He also intends to appoint a spokesperson to improve interaction and public relations.
the coming months will be crucial for Tusk’s government as it navigates a complex political environment and
strives to deliver on its promises to the Polish people. The government must focus on economic growth, social
welfare, and national security to maintain its position and address the concerns raised by the opposition.
