The Magic of Meredith: More Than Just a Festival
The Meredith Music Festival has a rich history, starting back in 1991 as a humble “party for about 200 people.” Over the years, it has blossomed into a world-renowned event, attracting international acts like Kraftwerk, jami xx, Liam Gallagher, The Breeders, and Billy Bragg.
But Meredith is more than just a music festival; it’s an experience. It’s about the community, the atmosphere, and the shared love of music. As the organizers themselves put it, “It’s now a little vaster, a bit deeper, there’s more pageantry than in its infancy. It’s been an experiment in propagation. What was planted one year harvested the next. The spirit of ’91 preserved and evolved,an epigenetic mutation that’s retained the original strain of DNA.”
The “No D-khead Policy”: Respect and Good Vibes Only
One of the things that makes Meredith so special is its unwavering commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. This is embodied in the festival’s famous “no d-khead policy,” which has been in place as the very begining.
As the festival’s website explains,”In part it means looking after yourself and others. Just as importantly, it means treating each other with respect.” This ethos of respect and community is what truly sets Meredith apart and makes it such a beloved event. It’s about creating a space where everyone feels welcome and can enjoy the music without fear of harassment or negativity. It’s about the communal aspect and the positive ethos that it embraces.
