According to Nielsen’s provisional count, approximately 57.5 million people watched the first televised debate between former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate.
This represents a 12.74% increase compared to the 51 million viewers of the televised debate between President Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential candidate at the time, and former President Trump on June 27.
Nielsen’s preliminary statistics were based on viewership data from seven television networks. The final viewership data, including viewers who watched the debate in bars and restaurants, will be updated later.
Notably, the Nielsen count does not include viewers who watched the debate on online platforms. Therefore, the actual number of Americans who watched the Harris-Trump debate is likely to be significantly higher.
Historically, the most-watched presidential candidate televised debate was between former President Trump and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016, with 84 million viewers. This debate was a significant milestone in the 60-year history of televised presidential debates, which began in 1960 with the debate between Democrat John F. Kennedy and Republican Richard Nixon.

- 57.5 million: Estimated viewership of the Harris-Trump debate
- 12.74%: Increase in viewership compared to the Biden-Trump debate
