The Twin Falls Coroner’s Office has identified Colton Copeland, 29, as the man fatally shot by police officers during a standoff on April 29, 2026.

The incident began around 1 p.m. On April 29, when officers from the Twin Falls Police Department responded to St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center following a report that an individual had been stabbed.

Following the report, police identified a suspect and located him at a residence in the 600 block of Washington Street North, situated approximately two blocks south of the College of Southern Idaho campus.

Standoff and SWAT Deployment

At approximately 4:50 p.m., officers established a perimeter in the neighborhood and closed Washington Street North between Filer Avenue and Falls Avenue. The Twin Falls Police Department deployed the SWAT team in an effort to take the suspect into custody.

Police reported that officers spent several hours attempting to persuade Copeland to surrender peacefully.

The situation escalated around 6 p.m., at which point officers shot Copeland. According to police reports, Copeland was armed with a knife at the time of the shooting.

First responders staged nearby and attempted life-saving measures at the scene, but Copeland was pronounced dead.

No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.

Investigation and Administrative Review

The Magic Valley Critical Incident Task Force (CITF) was activated to investigate the shooting, with the Cassia County Sheriff’s Office serving as the lead agency.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave. The Twin Falls Police Department stated this action was consistent with standard procedure.

Once the CITF has completed its investigation, the incident will also undergo an administrative review.
