Twins’ Royce Lewis to Injured List; Byron Buxton Nursing Bruised Elbow
Updated June 15, 2025
HOUSTON—The Minnesota twins face more injury woes as third baseman Royce Lewis heads to the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. The injury occurred Friday during the Twins’ 10-3 loss to Houston. Lewis strained his hamstring running to first base on a single in the ninth inning. An MRI on Saturday confirmed the strain.
Adding to the Twins’ concerns, center fielder Byron Buxton exited Saturday’s 3-2 defeat against the Astros after sustaining a left elbow bruise. Houston starter Hunter Brown hit Buxton with a pitch in the sixth inning. Even though initially remaining in the game, Harrison Bader replaced Buxton in the seventh.
Twins manager Rocco Baldelli described Lewis’s hamstring issue as a mild strain. “It’s not a severe strain, but it is a strain that’s going to keep him off the field for a little bit,” Baldelli said. He acknowledged the disappointment but emphasized the team’s need to adapt.
This setback follows Lewis’s earlier absence this season, where he missed 35 games due to a similar hamstring strain suffered in spring training. The 2017 first overall draft pick has battled injuries throughout his career, including time missed last season due to a quadriceps strain and a groin injury. He also suffered ACL tears in his right knee in both 2021 and 2022.
Before the injury, Lewis was batting .202 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 30 games this season. He homered in Friday night’s game.
“I think it’s frustrating in general,” Lewis said, regarding the timing of the injury. “I’m tired of being the one that’s getting bullied and picked on by this game.”
Regarding Buxton, Baldelli indicated the outfielder is day-to-day. “It caught him very, very square, and it’s gonna hurt,” Baldelli said. “he feels it and he’s having trouble moving it too, too much. We’re not worried long term, but right now he’s hurting.”
What’s next
The Twins will evaluate Buxton’s elbow bruise daily. The team hopes Lewis’s hamstring strain heals quickly, aiming for his return within the 10-day IL stint.
